I am considering a small Honda or Generac generator to get some AC power while on the hook. One of the things I'd like it to do is power the A/C unit which was factory installed and I believe is 12,500 btu. Does anybody have experience to share with these generators on their boats? The 2000 watt units have 2200 to 2400 watt surge and weigh only 50 lbs which makes them easy to store and set up. Could that size run the A/C?

Depends on the A/C compressor start draw and if it has a step-start capacitor to lower the start current. My Honda 2000 will run my 12K BTU CruiseAir unit but it has this start current limiter.
I'm unfamiliar with any 2000 w genset which has a 2400w surge capacity at least in a small, light weight and reliable (read - Honda).
To me, the issue transcends the desire of A/C in that having a genset allows you to heat water, run appliances and charge batteries, all without using the engine and provides the added bene of A/C.

Same here, run my 12K Mermaid off of the Honda 2000. But don't turn on any other 110 draws. That includes the battery charger if the batteries are low.

My honda 2kW won't run the A/c on my boat. Not sure who the manufacturer is, but it is a/c w/reverse cycle heat pump.
