Second question first -- That is very high. My annual premium through BoatUS is $548. Premium depends on a number of factors, including experience and where you intend to sail, but the price you were quoted seems out of line.

As far as a generator, there really isn't a good place to put one, unless you could strap a small Honda onto the swim step. Realize, however, that you are then obligated to carry a supply of gasoline (and endure the noise and exhaust). I think a better solution is to increase battery capacity by adding a second 4D, and install an inverter (see my previous posts on this - happy to give you more details if interested). This works well for me, as I usually run the engine in the AM to leave my anchorage when cruising, and my boat lives in a slip with shore power where the onboard charger keeps the batteries topped off. Might be different if you're on a mooring, or stay anchored out for extended periods without running the engine.

1) I'm looking to install a genset this winter. I think the best place to install is just behind the aft berth bulkead on the 309. The space is quite impressive back there and I should be able to install from the berth once I take out the bulkhead. There are 3 small gensets that should work:

Next Generation 3.5KW.
Phasor Marine 3.5KW
Mase 3.2KW

I'm using the next gen. It weighs only 160lbs, measures only 28" x 15" x15" and is designed so that all maintenace points are on one side.

The weather is quite nice at this time, so I intend to sail for now. Haul out planned for january. Will try to post project details at that time. My boat has a slight list to the port with my a/c unit, so I'm hoping this will balance her out. I recall previous posts about similar problem with 309's. I don't know if this corrected on later boats (mine a 2006). But I recall some boats may have ballast installed on port to correct this. If yours does may want remove before putting in genset.

2) Insurance is way too high. I live in "Hurricane Katrina" gulf coast. And have full coverage, same deducs as yours for $950/ year with Nationwide. I tried the progressive website (cheap for cars) but they quoted around $2000/year. Don't know why such a large difference

Hope this helps

hi,
thanks for the reply. talked with warren pandy at catalina and he was very helpful but said they have never installed a genset on 309 and did not offer and option. sound like your idea would work as warren talked like it could be done. last quote i got on insurance through united marine underwritters was 1250.00 year for coverage on 132,000 as boat is pretty loaded up with options. will check with nationwide. united's quote was through ace american. our hull number is 182 and will be deliverd some time dec. let me know how your genset install turns out . also do you use a particular bottom paint as dealer use some type of ablatvive paint that diver/hull cleaner says does not work as well in our area. he recommends interlux trilux 33?

thanks robert

I used Interlux micron VOC. This will be first haulout in 2 years. Looked like holding up ok when I dove to look at it last month. I think the whole bottom paint issue has become confusiing as they continue to reduce the copper contents of paints. Some even use silica (sounds like sand to me). In general, it does seem you get what you pay for. Thiis stuff is expensive, so I hope its good, but I'm not so sure anymore.

Will plan to post the genset project, in january. I plan to have the boatyard install the genset mount platform and put in the thru hulls (yes, more holes to sink her). The rest I plan to do myself to keep down costs. Plan about 3 weekends for project, plus other upgrades. Dinghy davit, adding radar to my gps/chartplotter, and windlass.
