I am looking for any information/experiences on the installation of a genset in a 40.5. I have a 93 model and I am intrested in installing one to run the AC's. Any experienes or advise on location on boat, model and any other issues incountered while insalling it would be helpful. Thanks Capt. Kerry

Hi Kerry, I'm not able to provide any help...

regarding your boat model, but Hunter installed the Genset on a shelf above the main engine on our P42. Hunter Marine Customer Service can advise you where they install Gensets on your model when customer's order boats new from the factory. Terry

Maintenance

Kerry, Make sure all expected and some unexpected maintenance can be done without pulling the genset. Even if you are putting it where someone else has, get a mech who has serviced the particular model genset you're considering to loook at where it is going in your boat. My recommendation is based on spending over $2,000 to replace a $28 transistor set in my genset on a 1987 h40. I'll skip the detail I've written previously. If you want more specifics, check the archives.

Fischer Panda

Our 1996 40.5 has a 4KW Fischer Panda (enclosed) in the aft Stbd locker. It was installed by the previous owner and provides about 30 amps of AC. It is fresh water cooled and fits well inside the locker with plenty of space left over for storage. The muffler and discharge is located in the stern locker just under the stbd locker and the intake through hull and salt water filter is located in the same aft berth locker with the main engine's intake through hull and filter. So there wasn't too much trouble with the plumbing. The electrical connect goes to the main board where there is an either/or switch between shore power and the gen set. Looks like something a capable DIY kind of person could tackle. Works great providing Air Conditioning (we have a single 16K BTU unit), hot water, microwave power, and battery charging while at anchor. Hope this gives you some ideas... Chris

thanks every one

thanks everyone all this will help. Mike, if you ever pull the Phasor out you might try to put an electric sending unit in place of the mechanical fuel gauge and then wire it to an electric fuel gauge located where you can see it. That is what i did so i would not have to take all the plunder one puts in the lockers out just to see the gauge. Running out of fuel once on a hot windless day and a very upset crew helped me figure out a way to better keep track of my fuel. Chris, the panda is what I had in mind, glad to see that you were suscesfull in fitting it in that locker. thanks again everyone.
