I'm looking to install a nextgeneration 5.5 KW generator on my 40.5 in starboard aft locker. What I need to find out is, should I get it with a sound shield incloser or just put sound proof in the locker? Generator will be used to run AC all night. Any one out there with this unit that can give me an idea of the noise level.

Get Fisher Panda

I have a Fisher Panda 4.2 kilowatt genset. It is the quietest genset of them all. Their noise specs are on their web site fisherpanda.com. Check it out. You should order it with Double-shielded sound enclosure, rubber shockmount feet, muffler, and water separator for quietesat perfromance--it nakes a huge difference. I checked out all other gensets on the market and they are all much noisier. Mine just purrs along and does not keep the neighbors up either. By the way, diesel generators shouyld NEVER be run for any considerable time less than 1/3 loaded. That means you must have at least a 10 amp draw appliance at 110 V load all the time. A 5.5 kilowatt unit may be too big unless you buy resistance space heaters to use as a minimum load. That is what I use in the cabin for heating in the winter and in the cockpit in summer when using the A/C. The 4.2 KW unit is big enough to run all the 110 V appliances and the A/C. I installed a Westerbeke 5KW with Soundown

Six years ago I installed a Westerbeke 5KW genset in the starboard aft locker. I did not have room for a factory or custom enclosure, but have insulated the compartment on all sides, top, and bottom with lead-foam Soundown material. My end result is that the generator can be heard, but is not obnoxious when in the cockpit or the main salon. Forget about trying to sleep with it running unless you are in the vee berth. IMO there is a safety issue as well even though I have a CO detector. I agree that 5.5KW is too big. I can run both AC's, the water heater, and my battery charger simultaneously. I only shed load to run a hair drier or if the AC's are in heat mode. I have pictures and installation details if you are interested. Email me from the HOW owner's page. We can even set up a phone call if you like. Rich

The NextGen

Is pretty quite. If the gen is placed to close to the living quarters or under the floorboards you can always mount an air intake silencer using flexible intake hose. You can consult with Next Gen Power and they'll walk you through this. Also in regards to the size of the gen, it depends on how many units you're going run on it. Get a complete watt usage and consult with Next Gen for the correct sizing. Another thing that I like about their gens is that the fuel injection pump and nozzles are Bosch which are very reliable. They're good to work with. You can contact them at the following: 888-463-9879 904-642-8555 www.nextgenerationpower.com

I have a Panda 4.2 KW on a 380

I had a Panda built in the starboarf locker and it has been great. When under generator power the air comming out of the AC ducts are loader than the Gen Set. It has been a bullet proofe unit. Good Luck

Panda on a 426

I have a Panda Mini 8 on my 426 - very quite, but it is installed under the nav station seat in it's own sound insulated box. Works well and can sleep in either cabin at night wiht the A/C running and the noise is minimal.

Fischer Panda for sure

Not to bore you with the details, but I've had some dealings with FP, and I must say that their product quality is excellent, and their customer service attitude is very, very good. Why mess around with sound insulation, etc. This is a drop in box, and once installed properly, you'll forget about it. Very low noise, especially with a water gas separator. Also, get the Vetus water muffler. Amazingly easy to install.
