Hi: I have some general questions on my '85 - 28.5 muffler. This may seem kinda silly, but where exactly is the muffler? How long do they last - ballpark? How hard are they to replace? Thanks, Jim-

Muffler location

On my 86 28.5, the muffler was in the starboard lazarette, close to the head bulkhead. It was covered with a movable piece of plywood. You should see the rubber exhaust hose coming up from it before running towards the stern. as for how long they last, I can't tell as I've never had to replace one. The boat was totaled by hurricane George in 98, but the muffler was still in good shape: no leaks and no noise.

Muffler placement

You will know when you have to replace your muffler because you will hear the noise of the escaping gasses just like on your automobile. In my case, on my 1979 30' Hunter, I have just pulled out the muffler due to leaks. The 1 1/2" id hose runs from the starboard side of the Yamar diesel to the muffler which was aft of the engine, just behind the stuffing box, and then continued to the sterm. My muffler was 12 1/2" long and made out of metal. I am replacing with 1 5/8" vetus fiberglass muffler plus all new hose. Total price came in at $200.00 +/-. If you wish to check out muffler's on-line go to http://www.vetus.com or BoatUS, West Marine's web sites. Good luck Ian
