General Maintenance Questions

I am thinking about buying a 1988 C30 and don't have any idea what type of routine maintenance needs to be done on a regular (weekly/monthly) basis. Can you give me an idea? Also, after how many hours do you need to change engine oil and perform specific engine maintenance? Thanks for your help.

Routine

Hi BW. I change my oil every 50 hours of operating time, which equates to every fall before lay-up. Keep fuel clean and the filters changed when you change the oil and a good engine will run forever. If you don't know when it was done last, you might want to drain and refill the transmission.. Clean the air filter once a season, and check and refill the internal engine antifreeze, and you just about have all the stuff done. You might remove and clean the screen on the bottom of the electric fuel pump if it has not been done recently. The only other thing I can think of is to use a hand pump to suck up the gunk from the very bottom of the fuel tank. Access thru the fuel gage sending unit hole. Good luck Dave S/V Westwind

C-30 general Maintenance

Have the prop shaft zinc checked by a diver every 6 months or so. Change the zinc in the heat exchanger at least annually. Clean and lubricate the winches every 2 or 3 years (you will not be able to dismantle the Lewmar jib sheet winches all the way}. Lubricate the Edson pedestal moving parts with teflon spray - go inside by taking off the compass. Keep the steering quadrant as rust free as you can.

Refilling Compass

I'm buying a 1980 C30 on Thursday, the fluid in the compass in low, any ideas on how to refill it? Thanks, Jim

I am told the liquid is paint thinner...

in the compass. I have not done it, but the owner of the boat I am buying tells me that you take the cover off of the compass, remove the ball, and fill through a bladder using a needle. I think I will have to do this on mine in the next year or so, so if you try it or get better advice, I'd be interested.
