Looking for recommendations for gelcoat repair after a 'close encounter' with a buoy. Damage is a foot above the waterline on the starboard bow, about a 12" by 12" area that is moderately damaged. By moderate, meaning that the underlying fiberglass looks fine but the gelgoat is destroyed. Boat is in Sausalito but I would bring to Richmond, Alameda or SF if need be.

You might try contacting Berkeley Marine Center. They offer full services. I've only used them for haul-outs, bottom painting and some mast work aloft.

Attack buoys are an under reported phenomenon. From out of nowhere they appear and feast on gelcoat. I had to fend one off in Norfolk, VA a few years back. It's a dangerous world out there, be careful, be safe.

I had an encounter with one. In the post season layup I was ready to rip the marina for scratching my gelcoat when the admiral not so gently reminded me that I was driving when the buoy bit. In my defense, I knew where the buoy was. It is anchored after all. But I just lost track of it while circling around. Maybe that's not a good defense.
