Does anyone know what is the best product for repairing small nicks? I am going to attempt the work myself. Any guidance will be helpful.

Try Marine Tex.

David: You may want to try Marine Tex. When it is cured you can sand it with wet/dry sandpaper. You can find it at most Marine/Boat stores.

Evercoat

I have been using a product lately, and I think it's called Evercoat. It is basically a kit with polyester gel, a hardener and various colors, primary and otherwise, for tinting. I have repaired numerous holes from old equip etc., nicks and dings both inside and out, and it works very well. Mixing the colors can be tricky and it is surprising how little of the tint that you need. The repairs blend perfectly with the surrounding gelcoat and the un-cured color appears to be identicle to the cured color.
