Gel Coat Problem

I recently got a '76 Albin Vega(2926)and when I hosed it down over
the weekend, a powder looking substance showed up in the water around
the boat. Does anyone know what this is and how I can fix it.

Thanks

It is hard to say what the powder may be without seeing it. Un-waxed
Gelcoat does have a tendency to chalk up as it sits in the sun. If the
gelcoat appears good after you wash it, and the powder does not show up in a
second washing, then I would give it a coat of wax and not worry about it.
If the gelcoat still feels powdery after you wash it, you may have to use a
more abrasive cleaner wax or polish to get down to good gelcoat.

It's also possible the the powder could be years of build up of bird
droppings, turned to powder by the weather, if the boat has been sitting
awhile. Air pollution is another possibility if you live near an industrial
area. I used to keep my previous boat at a Marina on a Navy air base. It
had a tendency to build up an oily film if not washed regularly.

Good luck with the new boat.

Aloha Brian,

Looks like another terrific Rendezvous! One comment though: I think that Peter Bell is more appropriately characterized as a "Used-to-was" or "Has been" rather than a wannabe d;^)

Also, Jim and Gloria Elder will be there with Wren, trailering up from Ashland, OR, picking us up in Seattle and launching at Anacortes, WA.

A hui ho!
