I'm removing all the old bottom paint from a 1987 Ericson 34. Could the gel coat be blue instead of the typical white. I've done a small test area and that seems to be the case.

More Gel Coat Color

I can't help with your problem, but I have a similar question you reminded me of. I need to match the "white" topsides gel coat on my 87 Ericson 26. Does anyone out there have any data on the color matching for me.

Blue gel coat

I don't know about the 80s boats, but my '76 has a blue gelcoat topsides - how far down it extends, who knows? A previous owner did a bottom job and barrier coated it. But blue gel coats were definitely used by Ericson (as were yellow and red, among others) for hull colors.

barier coat is white

On my 87 Ericson 34 I will be stripping just as soon as weather permits. My barrier coat is white. Don't know what the color of the glass underneath is but you might consider investigating whether you even have a barrier coat (subsequent owner(s) may have taken it off inadvertantly). What are you using to strip? I purchased a West Marine product this week and am not sure if it was the best buy. I have also been advised the chemical stripper works more slowly under 60 degrees F (we have been under 50 for a week). I may have to leave the material on for up to 24 hours.. Maybe 3M has a stripper that's easier to use. Good luck.

Bottom coat stripper

I plan to have the bottom sand blasted to remove the years of bottom paint. I've also heard that the stripper products require warmer weather than we now have to be effective.

Up date on stripping

The West Marine chemical stripper is not working up to my expectations. I think I'll have to recoat. Where I have taken the bottom paint and barrier coat off there is a thin coat on the glass that is pink.
