Help please. We have a 7 year old Hunter that had some gel coat cracks. They were repaired by a boat yard. The ones on the smooth surfaces look okay, not great but we can live with them. The person who sold us the boat came back to work on the non skid areas (2 major cracks around the pedestal) but used a DIFFERENT color. We now look like we have tan mud on the deck. It was also put on too thickly, like he was plastering a wall. Anyone have any ideas on what we can do to make this look better? My wife is a clean freak and it drives her crazy. (No I'm not, but it looks like somebody upended plaster of paris there and it stuck.) Both of us would appreciate any advise/expertise. Thanks, Tim and Sarah aboard the Grace

Are you sure it was gel coat used around the pedestal?

From your description, it sounds like MarineTex was used. Gel coat wouldn't fill any large cracks. If it is MarineTex, you can sand it carefully and then apply your finish coating.

Repair

As Jimq26 stated sand and make sure the repair is cured. Wipe down with acetone to make sure it is clean. Then mix some gel coat using the kit from West Marine (or wherever). The tray that the repair kit comes in is transparent. I lay it on the deck and mix the color until it is exactly the same as the deck I am trying to repair. Then apply with a "popsicle" stick and let it cure. This stuff only does a fair job as a repair medium, but it is great as a topcoat to improve the cosmetics. http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/producte/10001/-1/10001/99770/377%20710/0/Gell%20Coat%20Repair/Secondary%20Search/mode%20matchallpartial/0/0?N=377%20710&Ne=0&Ntt=Gell%20Coat%20Repair&Ntk=Secondary%20Search&Ntx=mode%20matchallpartial&Nao=0&Ns=0&keyword=Gell%20Coat%20Repair&isLTokenURL=true&storeNum=95&subdeptNum=674&classNum=674
