Has anybody had experience with the new gel batteries? Good or bad, my chief complaint is the price, Whew!! 245 amp /hrs is about $450.00 plus shipping , tax ect. Do you think they are worth the $$$ if you really don’t need a batt. that can be installed on it’s side? I think they last longer, but are they cost effective?

Sealed batteries

I got a sealed battery at Academy Sports for $100. Omega brand. It is great to have a battery that cannot make an acid mess no matter what position it is in. Well worth $100, but $450?? What is this $450 battery? 245 Amp/hrs?? Must be super industrial or military.

more finicky

I havent's seen anything lately about a new gel battery. The technology has been around a long time. I carefully considered gels 11 years ago when it was time to upgrade the boats and the RVs at the same time. The charging requirements were more finicky and demanding for the gels than for the sealed Optima wet plate batteries. I've been very pleased with the OPtimas. That easily take a 100 amp charge, but will charge to capacity at anyting over 10 amps. Will stay charged without any attention for 12 months and still crank an engine. I have four of them in my M26X and four in my travel trailer because they are smaller and lighter weight. They have never let me down. I have them in my SUVs. In one truck the optima was twice, accidently discharged down to 9.5 volts. It was brought back up to full capacity and stayed that way. No gas or acid emissions, no corrosion, no problems. Highly vibration resistant. Mount in any position. I highly recommend them after using them in both light duty and heavy duty applications for over 10 years. They cost more, but the reliability, ease of charging and not overcharging, the lighter weight and absolutely no maintenace required makes it worth it, especially for boats and RVs that don't get used every day.

Orbital -- not Omega

A senior moment. My sealed battery is an orbital made by Excide. Don't know how I got omega.

I weighed the cost bennifit of using gel batteries for my truck. They are supposed to last twice as long in a high vibration enviroment, like my semi. But your sail boat is a low vibration deal. They can be mounted side ways, but not upside down. Right side up is easy enough way to mount your batteries. They can freeze and leak if discharged and it's cold enough, just like acid bath batteries. They do take a charge quicker because they don't boil, but too high a voltage on the charge and they are fried. They can give you more cranking amps. in cold weather. The main reason I was looking at them. BUT they cost 2 to 5 times as much, and don't last anymore than twice as long. Less if you charge them wrong.

Best Batt. for a Mac

P.S. I use the Wal-Mart marine deep cycle batt. on my Mac. $64.98 Cranks an out boardwith pleny of amps. to spare and isn't hurt by deep discharging.
