My linkage from the shift lever to the cable has broken off. I disconnected the transmission lever to limp home, took the compass off, and looked down in the hole. I see a broken end inside the cable jacket, but cannot grab it. I cannot push or pull the bottom end into or out of the cable jacket. I'm ready to pull the bolt holding the bracket where the cables mount at the upper end, but I'm chicken. Any ideas? If I loosen the bracket, does everything fall into the bilge, or is it a safe thing to do? (I assume at this point that I must replace the cable.)

What ever you do

Don't remove the bolt!!! cause it holds a clamp that holds the cable just loosen the bolt and disconnect the cable from the pedistal,if its broken at the top then you should be able to remove the whole cable since you disconnected it at the tranny and use that for a measurement.
