So I went to check the level in the transmission on my relatively new Yanmar. The owner's manual says it should be between the two lines on the transmission fill cap dipstick. One problem, there is only one line on the dipstick. I am clearly low but the only other marking on this dipstick is a small hole about 1/4 inch from the top. Anyone know more about this?

I would recommend

My thought is the single mark is the full mark, but it may be the low mark. I would drain the oil and add the prescribed amount. Then check the oil level. Now you know where it is supposed to be. Not a real big deal.

Mark

On most Yanmar transmissions, the oil level should be kept between the lower end of the dip tube and the lower mark - thus the lower mark indicates the full level. The fluid level should be checked with the dip stick cap loosed and sitting on top of the transmission housing - not screwed in.

An instructor at a Yanmar maintenance course once suggested that the bottom of the dip tube could be cleaned and spray painted white to make it easier to see the fluid level.
