any one know how to remove timing gear cover on yanmar sb8? I have everything unbolted from case cover comes out 3/4 inch and stops cold.

not sure here but you may have to remove the flywheel first

Not sure here either but wouldn't the timing gear be on the other end of the flywheel? I always thought (and this may be different with a marine engine) that the timing gear and the cam gears were either direct drive or driven with a chain. That would be a lot of gears (stresses and torques) all at one end wouldn't it? I suppose if everything were moving in different directions (CW,CCW,CW,CCW kind of thing), there would be a natural counterbalancing. Looking for some edification myself.
i may have misunderstood i was thinking about the timing mark cover that is on the flywheel cover on my engine...the timing mark is on the flywheel and the coursor is on the cover....if i am incorrect plz disregard....

I'd say the camshaft is the shaft sticking out of the "front" case just above and to the left of the crankshaft harmonic balancer (pulley thing on the crank). It rotates backward from the crank and at a lower RPM which would mean it is driven by gears. The injector pump is being driven off this shaft so it may need to come off first to allow its drive paw/cam/lever to be out of the way and allow the cover to come off.
As a general rule you have to take the engine apart from the outside and work inward. All those smaller parts like injector pumps, oil pumps ..... lots of stuff have drives that have to be out of the way so the covers that hold them can move along the shafts.

The SB8 is a vertical cylinder engine, the YSB is a horizontal cylinder engine.. not the same.. Sailor27 is asking about the gear case cover, not the flywheel housing. The gear case cover is right behind the harmonic balancer, like Bill says.. The gear case houses the governor as well as the cam end and the injector pump. Sailor27, the hang up is most likely the cam that drives the fuel injector and/or the hand crank stub. That stuff is critical to the engine running and has to be put back EXACTLY as it was. The "fuel cam" that drives the injector pump is right behind the hand crank stub that is just above and left of the dampener pulley. It rides on but is not integral to the camshaft. I am not familiar with the SB8 but based on the construction of other Yanmars, it looks like the set screw in the end of the hand crank stub and then the stub has to be removed before the cover will come off. There may be more stuff that has to be removed, and I would recommend you get a manual before going forward. The manual will show which parts are injection critical and will show the correct assembly. (most of the time).. Good luck with it !
Once again to all but it looks like I have go for a mech @$90.perhr min charge $150.00. WOULD LOVE O FIND A SERVICE MANUEL but they dont seen to exist for an sb8. well happy holidays to all,and smooth sailing.

If you think about the cost it is really quite reasonable considering you have to pay $150 just to get a mechanic to look at the engine just once. the second time you do something to its free.
