The other thing I notice all too frequently is that some tend to make definitive statements as fact when it is really either their mis-perception or incorrect opinion disguised as a declarative statement.
If anyone is bothering to read this, please continue to give advice, suggestion or an educated guess but also frame it as such, not as fact. Doing otherwise only serves as a disservice to others which can sometimes cause a bigger problem.

I wholeheartedly agree with Don. Murray, if you don't believe the dealer, I don't know why in the world you are asking on this forum for the proper answer. And where will you double check it? If only those who ask questions would first read the owners manual or go to the manufacturer's web site for an authoritative/knowledgeable answer. Unless replies to your question refer you to printed reference material (Chapmans, Calder, etc.) or web sites, the odds are you will not get the answer you seek- which is the answer you NEED.

Update: Actually, you WILL get the right answer, but there will be so many wrong ones that you won't know one from the other- and therein lies the rub..

Thanks, Claude, for an excellent explanation of motor oil vs ATF in small transmissions. This will be enormously helpful to those of us with older engines where the transmission may not re readily identified or may not be the original.

Keep it Simple: On the side of the transmission case is a small metal label. It has the Make; Model, Gear Ratio: AND information on what type of oil to use.

Thanks again guys - checked the site for my MK2P gearbox. It requires that same oil as the engine. The manual was not very clear on this point by the way, I spent a few minutes looking it over last evening on the boat (I had limited time - what's new) but could not find it there quickly. Problem solved - 0.3 liters, in case you are wondering.
