I yak at a lot of cool folks on various sailing forums including this one. I'm thinking of organizing a rally, race event in the PNW this Summer. I'm thinking it would be an informal race from Flounder Bay (outside Skyline Marina) out to and around Whale Rocks in the San Juan Channel, over to and around Smith Is and back to Flounder Bay for a raft up rally. Bob Perry has graciously volunteered to help assign PHRF ratings to those (like myself) who don't have them. The event would be very laid back in cruiser style. I'm thinking the race would be a Time On Distance affair with each boat clocked over and back instead of the normal fight at the line. We could also do two starts, one for those who wanna do the traditional start and one for the cruisier folks who don't care for fighting for a starting position. All racing would be strictly voluntary. The course would be a triangle affair so the W/L boats wouldn't have all the advantage. If anyone would be interested or have some ideas, post here or PM me.

Hmm

Well have to see what the consensus is. I don't know anybody down there, yacht clubs, marinas or otherwise plus it's 100+ miles from me. Maybe we can do two, one North and one South. It's still early.

it's not 100 miles Charlie

It's only 70 from Shilshole to Friday Harbor.

Can't bring my boat but?

It's a bit of a haul over the mountains for my C30 but maybe I could come as crew for someone who needs some rail meat. Keep on this project Charlie. It sounds like a lot of fun. My only concern, is like that of some others. That the weather you like may not like us. Ken

I'm thinking of Summer

When it's reasonably warm out. If I was looking for a bash in the slop, I'd schedule it in Oct or Nov. I think some fun in the sun (hopefully) would be cool. Maybe a pursuit style race with a raft up in the Bay later. We could even shorten the course to say, around Cypress Island to give more party/meet/greet time.

Charlie, I think you are going to have to come south

To get enough boats together. Shilshole marina has a lot of side tie guest space and I think allows rafting. Also Brownsville marina west of Blake Island does group reservations with a big side tie and raft up wall and has a meeting/drinking room. If you do a south of Everett event I am interested.

Ok, if you are interested, post or message me.

State your preference for North or South. This is in the early stages yet. Anybody down South or even North with connections to help set this up is more than welcome to climb aboard. I'll take all the help I can get seeing as how I'm starting to get positive response on five different forums.

Poulsbo, Liberty Bay is a great

anchorage and reasonably priced overnight dockside too. Great place for a raft up! 15nm west of Shilshole down Agate Pass.

I oughta have my youngest Son contact ya. He's stuck down at Job Corps outside Portland and needs to find a boat to crew on. He's jonesing something fierce. If ya know somebody who needs crew, he's kinda green but he's the kind of crew that dresses ship without being told and he's been out in some nasty stuff with me. Portland. That'd be a nice hard run.

Charlie

I am on the race committee at CYC. Have him stop by Centerboard Yacht Club in South Portland on Wednesday evenings at 5:15 and I will get him on a boat. Everyone knows me so he can ask for me by name. Our first race is on 5/28. Once he meets some of the crews, he should be able to secure a spot for some of the local regattas. BTW, we have 2 beautiful Knutson sloops at our club.

Sweet! I knew there were some Knutson's around

but I haven't heard of any yawls out on this coast. Tell the owners to log up here sometime. I don't know if Twan can get off campus during the week, I'll ask him. Thanks.

But, Wait

It's not 25 miles from Kingston to Elliot Bay, it is less than 12 nm, and it is only 48 nm to Skyline Marina from Kingston, by boat! Maybe if you schedule it late June, or mid July (for me).
