Gates belt finder gave me wrong belt size

For the yanmar 2gm20f it gave me belt 9309HD (795mm long) and its considerably too short. The quality of this belt is by far superior looking and feeling the two. Now if I can just get one that's the right size. And I bought 3 of them. :cussing:

the yanmar belt A37 is 37 inches (38 inches outer diameter. this belt is 31.29 inches (32 inches outer diameter)

Anyone know the correct gates part number? its a lot harder to find the belt by simple measurements (13mm x 965mm)

if you know the length you need, which seems to be a 37 inch belt, anyone who sells gates belts should be able to cross it to the gates number....

and you may be able to do it yourself here starting on page 685.

I have a 2gm20f yanmar, and it takes Dayco AP36 belt. The 37 was too loose. The 36 in the belt number stands for the length of the belt, and so this number position is transferable between manufactures, in case you can't get the one you usually do

Found it here.... Length MM Width MM Angle
9360HD ................. 36 3/8 924 1/2 13 38°
9365HD ................. 36 7/8 936 1/2 13 38°
9370HD ................. 37 3/8 950 1/2 13 38
(page 591 in gates catalog)

If 36 is the right length states in a previous post I got the 36 3/8 belt. I might but the one that's 7/8's also to be safe.

I can confirm this is not true. I bought both gates 36' belts (9365HD 36 - 7/8 AND 9360HD 36 3/8) DO NOT FIT or match the factory belt length. Too tight. :cussing::cussing::cussing:

Ive got 2 belts I'd like to sell you Mark!

Back to the drawing board for the 3rd time...

9370HD is the correct belt measuring (with old line, on side. not over the top or underneath, hold on SIDE of belt to get accurate measurement)

.........9370HD! Learn from my pain, sweat, time and money...

Perhaps the too-short (795mm) belts are correct for the 2GM20 (direct sea water cooled version?)

If so, there should be plenty of folks interested in your surplus - if you cannot return them for some reason.

Over the years, I've managed to keep the same engine (Universal M25) but changed alternators, adjusting arms and brackets six times! Each required a different belt. When I got the new bracket it came with two belts, neither of which fit! Drats.

The solution? First, know the width - 3/8, 7/16, 1/2. Then, find the lengths that are closest, and simply work from there. I went from 7400, down to 7350, then back up to finally 7395, since the 7390 was too short and the 7400 was too long.

In all cases, I tried them out, kept the packaging (gee, a simple cardboard sleeve), and returned what didn't work to the Napa store. If I got one dirty, a bit, I cleaned it before I put it in the sleeve.

Trying to do this stuff by the internet or "finders" for marine engines based on cars is nonsense and wasteful of YOUR time.

DIY.

Good luck.

PS When I found what worked, I got rid of the ones that I had on the boat that didn't fit, and bought another for an immediate spare.

take the old belt with you when you go to the parts store! :doh:

you guys do know that the length of the belt and which type of Vee it has is coded in the belt number right. Most manufacturers adhere to this standard and measure the belt length in mm. usually a 4 digit number. They do have their own codes in there too so you just need to know your belt length and look for that number in the belt code.

Got the belt 9370HD the other day and low and behold its the wrong belt too! Its a 1/4 inch too short but was able to get it on by "jumping" it with the motor (belt half way on the crank and bumped the starter to pull it around). Not need to tension as its pretty tight now.

the drama continues! 18 miles offshore due west of the Columbia bar entrance blue the pulley on the engine coolant line! New belt was putting too much tension on it. Ball bearing, grease and coolant all over place. Limped across bar and into Astoria for parts...

If you need help (and some delay is inevitable) I am in Portland and can get can get what you need. Am going to Cook Engine in the AM anyhow.

Too tight the belt means disagreeable consequences. Your description seems to implicate the fresh side circulation pump, but I am not sure.

If you can get local help disregard.

That would be a life saver Charles! Yes, your right. Its the fresh water side that is messed up. We didnt have much time yesterday to find the parts but did talk to one shop in the area that said they needed to get the part from the east coast and a few weeks out. I wanted to call all the local places before taking that route but I really hope it doesn't leave us waiting for weeks! We are at the "west" end of Astoria marina and are at the gas dock as all the slips are taken. So time is definitely not on our side at the moment. If you could get these I would be externally grateful!
