Our P30 1974 has 3 gate valves. One for the overboard discharge, another for the head intake waterline and the last for the head sink. I am looking for suggestions on replacing the gate valves and seacocks that attach to the valves. Thanks Sandy

replace

Replace the gate valves with ball valves and at the same time replace all thru-hull fittings as well as they are probably the originals. Makes life a lot easier. You have a choice of Marlon from Forespar or basic bronze. Bronze has a great record of success, but Marlon is now becoming common. With the Marlon you get no electrolysis, no corrosion and they say they last.......I am currently in the process of changing all mine. I will be using bronze (80% sure of that at this point....still thinking!). Good luck! Greg

While it may be possible

to simply replace your gate valves with seacocks or inline valves (see current edition of "Boatworks" for an article on replacing seacocks), you have a 1974 model boat and you probably have the original thru-hulls. If you are going to bite this bullet and get rid of those gate valves (a very good idea), think about replacing the thru-hulls at the same time. It may be that you'll have no choice anyway as you have a high probability of breaking the thru-hull seals when you try to screw off those old gate valves.

Seacocks

Greg have you replaced any seacock and gate vales yet? We tried to unscrew one that is used for raw water it's located on the port side under the bearth...this valve is a real bear...left it for a warmer day. Thanks Sandy

Two week away

from that project. I will add some heat prior to trying to turn them....not too much to harm the hull and will use the biggest wrench that can get in each spot. I also have tools to hold from the outside. If all else fails, I will cut them out, putting my saw blade up the fitting and cut a few places. They usually come out easily then. I will be replacing all the through hull fittings with new seacocks. I do not have any gate valves on this boat fortunately. Post pictures if you are having trouble....there are some pretty smart people here that can give advise............. Good Luck! Greg
