OK, so I have a frozen (shut) intake (gate) valve on my 1984 Hunter 27 with a 12 hp Westerbeke 12 B, and the boat is already in the water. Does anyone have ideas of how to change the valve out without hauling the boat. I got a few suggestions such as plugging the inlet (which is a slotted bronze fitting) from under the boat using toilet bowl sealing wax and going to work from the inside... Anyone?????

Ed,

Put a plunger over the sae side of the thru-hull. Then go to work on the inside. You can also go to NAPA and buy a rubber expansion blug for TEMPORARY use. I stress temporary because it's made with regular steel. Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel Buford, Ga imd_ga@hotmail.com

I replaced all of the gate valves on my Hunter 40 1985 model... with ball valves I also decided to replace all the through hulls with flush mounts... This occurred after I discovered that I had to use enormous force to get the gate valve to come off; which caused me think that I had caused damage to the seal [rubber] between the hull and bottom of the mushroom through hull fitting... This occurred when I had to dismantle the rear bathroom in order to get "purchase" on the rear sink gate valve... So the first thing you should decide is! Can I get a pipe wrench on the gate valve; apply sufficient leverage on it; to be able release, the likely over torqued fitting on to the through hull; further with out damaging the through hull seal.. 4-5 of my through hulls are not sufficiently accessible. So I discovered a trick.. Using a grinder... grind out the through hull from underneath the boat; takes 10 minutes Go at it from the middle of the hole; then you can observe progress before you cut into the hull... As for doing it in the water.. well; be aware of the above Sincerely Glenn Strazds P.S. Of the 8 ball valves; the first 1.5" is marine with a drain, the next 2 come from a marine supply store... next 4 from home depot the Last 2 from wholesale plumbing supply store 1.5" hard to find.. $22.00us no drain As for through hulls that marlin plastic appears to be OK
