Gate valve leaking

Hi All,
I'd like to pose a question for the group. My raw water valve needs
changing and I'd like to do away with all of the other "holes" in the
boat and use only one thru hull. If I put it under the galley sink
(where it drains now, and rerun the sink drain) will I get enough
water feed to the engine? Is it low enough below the water line?

Hi Robert;

doing like you propose might air getting sucked into the
engine- keep the engine cooling as it is!

I must agree with Wilhelm. I suggest that you make a schematic drawing of
the system, showing all connections you are considering. Once this is done, try
to see if you can find any way that the engine water pump can suck air in
through any other line, such as from the sink, with the drain left open. If it
can happen, it will!

This merely omits combining the engine cooling suction with others. You may
be able to combine the sink saltwater suction and the head sea-suction. Again,
draw a schematic and try to find problems. I think it may work, and would
reduce your number of hull penetrations.
With your system though, make absolutely sure that you cannot draw sewage
into the sink if you have the sea-valve shut when you try to pump water into the
sink.

Thank you, Wilhelm and Ed.

It is always nice to have a group of such good and kind sailors. I
have contacted a ship yard to possibly do the work but the price is
prohibitive. I am definantly leaning toward doing it myself at a
later date if my repair job holds up. I like the idea of one thru-
hull (like the Lorna Doone)in the bilge keel and a check valve for
the sink. I am also seriusly considering taking the head out and
going to a sani-pottie. What do you think?

Robert--I sailed a mcgregor 26X with a portapotti--in hot weather they smell no matter how much chemical you put in--I can live with it but the wife can't. jorgen
