Gate Valve for Waste???

Hi all, With my baby on the hard for the season for a multitude of projects, I noticed something that somewhat alarmed me. One of the many projects on my mind is to replace the "bag-style" holding tank with a hard plastic one. While poking around below decks I noticed that the seacock for "at-sea" disposal of waste isn't a seacock at all, it's a gate valve. Not only that, it's frozen hard in the open position. Is this a factory installation or did a previous owner do this? I would rather have a good old seacock there myself and intend on making the change. Just wondering if other H33 owners have this or is it just my boat. BTW, it's a '79 H33. Thanks Ernie

Hunter Valve

The factory did in fact install those lovely gate valve on all their boats back then. I replaced all of mine with proper bronze ball valves. During my first season the stem broke on the OEM valve, the handle kept turning and the valve never opened. I was able to use the thru hull fitting and screw on new valves. Be sure not to spin the fitting or it will need to be rebedded. It's a good time to check and replace the wood backing plates on the fittings if necessary

rebed or not?

A piggyback question for Daryl: In the same spot with the valves on my '79 27, I planned to remove all the thru-hulls and rebed them. Am I being anal?

Nope

I'm lazy and generally don't fix things that ain't broke. I knew my Hunter ownership would be temporary so I didn't try to fix, repair and redesign everything. If you plan to keep your vessel a while it makes sense to do that job correctly

gate valves on H33

My 79 H33 still has the original gate valves on waste and galley drain through hulls and replacement is not on my urgent list. Both are threaded onto good quality bronze throughhulls and as long as they operate smoothly then they'll stay where they are. Biggest fault I find with a good gate is that you can't tell by looking whether its open or shut and it does take a number of turns to shut it down.

Changed Mine

When I bought Weyrling (then Penguin) it had the original gate valves. The PO said he never bothered closing them. The surveyor identified them as the only "YOU ABSOULUTLY GOTTA DO" item in his survey. So I did. All were frozen open by the way. It was the first major project for me and Weyrling, we both survived with minimal foul language. About the bag holding tank. See Terry Arnolds project. I copied his idea (thanks again Terry), with minor modifications. It frees up space in the locker, and wasn't difficult to do.
