I am wondering what is the best and safest way to store a couple of gallons of gasoline (for my Coleman generator) on my 25' sailboat?

Gas Storage

Spare Gasoline can be stored on deck, in Red PVC Jerry Cans, which are well secured to the rail (stanchion, toe-rail, & lifeline). There really isn’t anywhere else to store dinghy or generator gas on a smaller sailboat. Gord

Safest way is don't bring it aboard!

But if you must, store it on deck in plastic gasoline-approved containers lashed to something that will ensure it won't move. Also, make sure you generator exhaust isn't in a spot were it will leak into your cabin. I suggest installing an inexpensive carbon monoxide sensor in the sleeping area of the cabin too! Better to be safe than to wake up dead!

Gas Storage

We have a Hunter 23 and it had an open compartment in the cockpit. I took teak strips and closed it in and left about 1" gaps between the slats. This way its secure from theft. (sort of) and it is sealed off from the rest of the boat. We had a catalina 25 that had a seperate compartment for fuel storage. Could you make a compartment for it and seal it off from the rest of the boat? Rob Morton S/V Euphoria
