gasket sealent

Hello all.....
I am replacing my impellor and thermostat and was wondering what everybody puts on the gaskets.
I've heard people using nothing and letting the paper gasket swell and do the job.

Have never used any sealant, paper gaskets work just fine.

I use Permatex Hi-Temp RTV Silicone Gasket Sealant.....a little bit works fine and I use it just for good measure cause I hate putting something all back together and it leaks....been there done that

I always liked the old style Permatex for sealant.

Seems as though the replacements, thermostat and impeller , would have come with gaskets. Seems as though trying to go without sealant is a long way to go for a shortcut.

They did come with gaskets.... definately would not work without it. Just asking what people use in addition. I have used marine teflon grease in the past as well as using nothing. Just want to hear about other techniques/opinions

The impeller is something you want to be inspecting at least once a year, so you don't want to do anything that makes it harder to access. One of the most useful engine add-ons is a "permanant" removable impeller cover. So, for sure you do not want to use anything on the impeller cover that hardens or is hard to remove & reseal.

For the impeller cover, i would just go with the gasket, and maybe a bit of marine grease. For the thermostat, also grease, or maybe some non-hardening gasket sealant like Permatex #2.

I don't have alot of experience with the RTV gasket stuff, but I don't think I'd use it in either of the above applications.

put a film of teflon grease on gasket and no drips.... Now onto the thermostat.
