Gas Tank (outboard) location

Just moved from 23 to 1977 25'.
On 23 there was a seperate Lazerete for portable fuel tank for outboard.
On 25 there is just one opening to the hull storage, and the gas tank is just sitting loose in the hold.

Missing original mounting? Or what have you all built?

If memory serves, there is a space for a tank on the cockpit floor, aft, port side under the seat.

If you put the gas tank in the "hold" you will have to ventilate the area.

The nice, molded-in fuel tank compartment did not become standard on the 25 until the 1979 model. Before that the tank would need to be kept out in hte cockpit footwell, some owners built a box over their tanks locating htem at the aft end of the footwell, I would suggest a platform of sorts in that location to secure the tank and use the cockpit footwell sides as hte sides of the bow, then add a front and a cover. If you are skilled, you could build a box that could be recessed into the seat riser like the later stock compartment. Just be sure that the tank is 1) outside watertight area of boat, 2) secured against movment, and 3) well ventilated and easy to access. You DO NOT want ANY gas to be stowed below decks!!!

I'll include pictures of the compartment that my Dad built for our old CAL 21, the cockpit is deeper on an O'DAY 25, so the lid may be lower than the top of the seats.

Do you use the tank in the position located in the pictures while using the outboard? Or, do you move the tank out to the open cockpit (outside the tank locker) area when engaging the outboard?

The tank stays in the locker at all times, in fact the whole purpose of the locker was to provide a secure, on-deck place for the tank without having it underfeet. There is a pry-out deck plate located in the port aft corner of the lid and we ran the hose out thru that. The lid on this locker was actually screwed down in use and the tank was accessed by removing the forward cover, held in place by the padlock. The only time the tank came out was for filling and for off-season storage. The primer bulb could be reached thru the forward cover openning. The tank sat on a pair of "cradles", one on each side keeping it off the cockpit sole and allowing airflow around the tank. Tank was a 3-gallon OMC metal tank. I think that I did try my 3-gallon OMC Dura-Tank once and it also fit.

The deck plug visable in the back of the picture was originally to connect our battery charger before we installed the tank locker, soon after installing the locker we had a battery-charging coil installed on our outboard and removed that plug.

Indeed after I wrote, same thought hit me. Last boat was diesel. Boat is still on trailer, and tank was just sitting in hold when packed. When I pullled out, and set in cockpit to look, same "locker" idea hit me. Simpler than your dads, as security not an issue here, but will secure and with a "fiddle" on front, make a fairly nice cocktail table I believe! I will try and post a picture to thank you for your replies. (going to be a few weeks as other things higher on list) Jack

I would try to find a polyethylene 6 gallon gas tank that will fit in that fuel compartment instead of a metal one which will rust out and leak some day. I was able to find a six gallon OMC Dura tank for my fuel compartment and I think there is another manufacturer's tank that will fit in that small area.
I mention this because years ago I had a metal gas tank leak on my boat. The gasoline ate a hole in the self bailing cockpit hose and gasoline got into the bilge of my boat. It took a lot of cleaning and months to get rid of that stink. This was my bad because I had left the tank in the fuel compartment of my boat over the winter. I have a poly tank now and I store it in my shed for the winter now.

My 76 oday25 has a platform that some one built in the hold on the port side. And a plastic fuel tank sits on that. I will be down there tomorrow more then likely I can try to find a manufacture if you like. The filler runs up to just port of the tiller on the top of the transom. And the vent on the transom port side. It is equipped with electric fuel gauge.
