Lazarette venting

While My V21 circa 1976 is smaller than the 26(plan to upgrade in a few years) I too have a lazarette that is open through the boat. Since the cockpit is a good bit smaller on the 21 than the 26 and I was given a 6 gallon tank, I had to go with the lazarette. To manage this(since we all know the engine wont get fuel without the tank vented) I devised a vent from a spare cap to the tank. this is done with adapters to a flexible(garden)hose and a thru-hull at the transom just behind the tiller which should make it too high for all but the most stubborn following waves. My tank is bungeed VERY securely in the lazarette and I feel it's much safer by far than using the internal outboard tank and keeping a spare can of fuel in the boat and hoping it doesn't tip over - been there, done that, was lucky we didn't explode when it did tip and empty into the bilges. I have decided that the hose needs to be a bit longer to allow a loop in case condensation builds in the hose near the thru vent (of course if that following wave did hit us, the tank might cease to vent and the engine would stop..)

foam in the can / venting cap

oldiesrocker2001, can you post a photo of your vented tank cap? I think I need to upgrade my tank venting.... Chris, I've foamed the top sides of the laz.. I'd advise to shoot the foam into a garbage bag, that is positioned at the top of the laz opening. this will help seal the opening with a plastic seal, and should expand tightly in place. you keep the foam going, from one position, and the foam grows around the can's tube and is still moldable with the garbage bag used to help form, and not become too sticky. (use rubber gloves) I used masking tape on mine, and there is some fumes in the cabin... on a calm warm day... (I'm also thinking of adding another exaust vent in the motor well. and maybe a blower...)

Vent locations

Our "intake" is mounted on the aft locker cover - best airflow and highest location. It is a clamshell over a 3 inch plastic fitting which has a bug screen. The exhaust is similar but on the inboard side of the outboard well (half way up, half way back and the clamshell pointed downwards to keep most of a breaking wave out)- and has a length of 3 inch flexible vent that extends it to near the bottom of the locker (so it can scavenge from as low as possible). It also routes through a 12 volt bilge blower and has a bug screen. The fuel tank vent has it's own inverted "J" fitting and clamshell in the outboard well. I'm still not convinced the cabin can be a legal source of ventilation for a fuel locker. I know there are rules regarding "crew quarters" but the word "source" would be the hard one to comply with i.e. any backflow and it's not a source. Chris
