The bulb on my outboard fuel line fills up when I pump it but does not stay full and the motor then runs out of gas. It appears that the air valve on top of the tank is open. any ideas on possible cause?
I experienced similar trouble when I had a hairline crack in the hose between the tank and the bulb. That side of the system never sees “pressure” so cracks are hard to find. I’d say the reason you run out of gas is your loosing prime in the line. The vent on top of the fuel tank is supposed to stay open. This allows air to replace the gas as it is used out of the tank.Hope it helps.
John: Isuspect one of two things #1 the engine driven fuel pump is not working. #2 the pick up tube in the fuel tank fell off. Pump up the bulb and then lift the tank higher than the engine if the engine stays running from "gravity feed" of the fuel then it is the engine pump. If not look for a small pinhole leak sucking air. hope this helps "MIC"
On an outboard motor and you keep pumping, then there is a break in the fuel line and or bulb. I suggest replacing the fuel line first and that should take care of it. Noble was right on the money. You can buy a generic and use the fittings at the end of the hose that is currently being used. I assume this of course is an outboard. If that is the case, then we are on the right track. Please advise what you findCrazy Dave Condon
If you replaced the bulb or the line, make sure you have it running the correct way to the engine. My friend replaced his and had the bulb on backwards and it did the same thing.Randy SimmonsH23 "Munchkin"
