The original equipment gas shock absorbers, similar to what you see on hatch back cars, are worn out on the freezer and refrigerator lids. Does anyone have a source for replacements. Also does Hunter have any after market parts for sale besides the silly hats shown on the Hunter website. Steve 33.5 1993 Hunter

We Use A Spring
Steve, We have the same year and model you do. I use a fold away spring for our lids. To tie or untie the two lids together I used a 3" barrel bolt lock on the teak face. This allows both lids to be supported by the one spring. Cost about $15 at West Marine. I've attached a picture showing the spring. Jeff 1993 H33.5

Any specific charge?
My 290 doesn't have any lifts on the fridge and at least once a month someone bangs their head, usually pretty hard as the lid drops on them. I've checked auto stores and West Marine and the gas shock absorbers have different ''ratings" or charges (for different pressure and strength of lift). Can anyone provide, hopefully scribed somewhere on the shock, the amount of charge or lift from the shock absorber? Much appreciated if this makes any sense. (definitely going to look into the "spring" mentioned by Jeff as backup; thx)

Try McMaster Carr, search for Gas Springs, and they will show a page telling how to figure dimensions and force. I've used these for other projects. Don't get too high a gas pressure, it will take two men and a boy to close the damned thing.

The gas springs on my Hunter . . .
were from Attwood Corporation. They were well marked and were 40 pound springs (one each for two lids). If you go to their website they have published dimensions and ratings. Maybe you can match something up. The 40 pound springs seems to heavy, as I cannot compress them by hand. However, they work just right when attached to my icebox lid.

I have the same concerns, not so much to stop the head beating, but because we are too lazy to keep holding the lid up as we get more and more beer. Keep us informed on how it all pans out, I want to do the same thing to my 290.....maybe even a compressor someday.
