Gas or Electric

Looking at a Hunter 170. I'm on the fence about a 2hp 4 stroke Honda or some type of 12 volt trolling motor. I like the idea of electric but not the idea of storing a heavy 12 volt battery on the boat. About a week ago I received some type of boating catalog in the mail. It had a New German made rechargeable electric motor for boats. To bad my wife tossed it out. Has anyone else heard of this new motor?

Go with gas

The electric option may sound cool but the amount of energy you can pack into 50 lb of batteries is nowhere near the amount you can get in 5 gal of gas. Then you have to have a charger or haul the batteries around to get them charged and that means a shore power cable...... Or stop by the fuel dock on your way out and top off. OR sail out of and into the dock.

Get the gas engine.

It I'll bring you home in a steep chop against a headwind and current.

Yes I seen the electric motor

in the WM catalog, it weighs 27 lbs includying batteries and will operate for 2 hrs but at $2,299 you can buy a couple of Hondas and have money left over for gas. The motor operates on 24 volts which means you would need two 50 pounders to operate with remote batteries. They do sell the jumper cable kit for $279. Batteries not included. If gas engines are permitted where you sail, stick with the gas.

give it the gas

I am very happy with my nine year old Honda. It does the job admirably. I have a small trolling motor and use it when fishing from the 170. It makes a great fishing boat when the winds die down...
