Trying to put a 110 volt system to power kitchen appliances, refrig, ect. Have a 33 Univrsal diesel and know diesel would be better BUT will gas do just about same? Need to0 exhaust and get air to it as I'm trying to do it with a "home" machine insted of an expensive and hull piercing water cooled unit. Any thoughts?

an 1800 watt

Honda portable mounted high in the cockpit so that the exhaust is blown away will be the most convebient source of 110 volt ac . But be careful, that stuff can kill you, no matter where you get it. If you are not completely sure of what you are doing and how to make it work, find an electrician and pay him what he asks or else buy a big life insurance policy and make your favorite person beneficiary.

Check out these Yamaha Gas Generators

Check out the web page below. My company sells this generator and I am planning to put one in my C30 Aft Cockpit locker. It only weighs 27 lb and is super quiet. The propane tank is located in the same locker. The exhaust could be vented straight out the back of the transom. It has an inverter so will supply AC or DC power. I will only be using it to recharge my 12 volt system. Visit a Yamaha dealer and ask for a demo. Check with a Marine electrician before you go ahead on any special requirements. It has a bigger brother too but it is more weight. Ken http://yamahagenerators.com/ef1000is.htm?cart=11361766381790144

110 Volt power

I have just purchased a 1977 O'Day. It has the Atomic 4 (presumably 30 HP). I am in the process of trying to refit the boat with appliances. Have shore power in boat and available. Would I be better off to add a battery and use 12Volt appliances or to generate 110 and use regular household appliances. Seems less expense and hassle to use 12 volt. Just add parallel battery, solar recharging, a little extra necessary electronic gear and use all 12 Volt appliances. What are your thoughts? Geo

George,

There are many variables to your question. Are you going to use these appliances at the dock? or at anchor? or under way? There realy is no effecient way to make 110v away from the dock with out a generator. You could add a large battery bank and a big inverter. Then you'ld need a big alternator to recharge. I'd get with someone who is versed in electrical systems on boats and do a power survey. Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel BUford, Ga imd_ga@hotmail.com

air cooling isn't a great idea for a sailboat

gas powered isn't a great idea... There OK to put on a back transom to power your christmas lights once a year. But installed in and enclosed locker, overheating and producing exhaust...I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. I'd fear not waking up at all.

gas or diesel is not the real issue

gas or diesel is not the real issue here.Safety is (or should be) If you intend to use a small "home" type generator you will need to follow the other post advise and be warned of carbon minoxide poisining remember the "station wagon effect" of exhaust. Also you will need to carry gasoline to refuel any portable gas type generator,so this means either handling gas cans or a another fuel tank for the gas.It is dangerous to try and refuel a small gas generators small gas tank if you are in any sort of waves or the boat has any motion. Gas exhaust will kill you if not properly vented while diesel will not kill you you might wish you were dead for as sick as it will make you. There is a reason the these small portable generator and not installed on boats as a power supply for 110. They will not pass any of todays boat building standards and are dangerous on most boating applications. They have very limited uses in a marine application. You sound like you are looking for a installed generator to use all the time, (after all a refrigerator is not something you can run for a little while and shut down and expect to stay cool)In short these generator are not a good idea for long term use and another big draw back is they are not designed for a salt water/air enviroment and most likely will not hold up well. Good Luck !
