I have a 1987 h23 with a Nissan 5hp 2 cycle engine. What is the proper gas/oil ratio for this engine????? I have also located a used Genoa I would like to use on my boat at a good price. The problem is the Luff is 1'8" too long. Would it cost much to have this sail altered to fit my boat??? THANKS!

My late model (1999) Nissan 2 cycle uses a 100:1 mix ratio. And I beleive this will apply to all 5hp Nissans. So use 1 ounce to every 100 ounces of gasoline.

Hmmmmmmm........I thought 50:1 was pretty much universal for marine motors. I'm sure that's what I put in my Nissan 2 stroke before I switched to a Honda 4 stroke and straight gas. Of course I could be wrong.

Not that I know it all by any means, but....
I have never experenced any 2 cycle motor using 100:1 mixture, much less anything older that 2000. 50:1 is the leanest and anything that uses that ratio and is worked hard is usually better off with 40:1. Spark plugs are cheap, pistons and liners would be cheaper than gold but probably higher than silver. Check this out RIGHT NOW! before running this engine. 15 minutes is enough to ruin the engine at the wrong mix if the oil is not enough. Ray

I would contact the manufacturer to be sure I was using the correct mixture. I purchased a new Evinrude 15hp in 1986. It had a factory recommended oil to gasoline mix of 100:1. It was used on a sailboat and never above 3/4 throttle. I think if I had been running wide open I would have increased the mixture. I purchased a used genoa that needed about 18" removed from the foot. The sailmaker suggested that the foot be cut 18" above the tack but that the cut should be straight across to just below the clew. This saves the cost of adding a new clew. Of course you want to raise the sail first to determine whether or not the clew in it's current position will be high enough. He charged me $150.00 and it worked great.

My 3.5 HP Nissan Outboard Manual says to use 25:1 for break-in or when heavy work load (can't imagine that) and 50:1 for normal or after break-in. I have a habit of keeping manuals and have been known to read before doing. Running at 25:1 will keep it really well lubricated and smoky. I like to run small quantity of 25:1 through before storing for the season.

Check with manufacturer/dealer
There is a wide disparity of answers here, so I'd check with the manufacturer or a Nissan dealer. Some outboards DO take a 100:1 mixture, my Yamaha being one of them. My old OMC took 50:1. Good luck.

The owners manual for my '99 8 hp Nissan recommended 50:1, but there are other outboards out there running at 100:1. I would strongly suggest you get the correct owners manual for your engine. Until then, I would suggest going no lower than 50:1. Too much oil creates more smoke, fouled plugs and may cause difficult starting. Not enough oil can get expensive VERY quickly. Good luck.
