Hope everyone is out enjoying the 4th.....my 1977 Oday 25 with VIRE 7 inboard is sitting in the slip since the engine won't start. This is the original Finnish single cylinder 2 stroke gas engine that has run like a champ.....except for this year. I'm looking for a recommendation for a mechanic that is very familiar with work on a small gas marine engine in the Annapolis/Baltimore MD area. I found one guy but he was too big to get in the cockpit locker to service the engine. I've done all the usual...fresh gas, new plug. new fuel/water filter, appears gas is getting through as plug is wet with gas when I remove it after cranking for 10 seconds...just seems like it isn't firing....hope someone here might have a good reference. I know you are looking for a mechanic, but you might dig into this yourself. There are only 3 elements in this equation: fuel, air, and spark. You said the fuel is getting to the cylinder, so time to check spark and air. My guess is that you are not getting spark. Follow that up, and you will fix this thing yourself! 2 stroke engines are usually bullet-proof, so there is probably no big issue.

You were right....no spark at all....not sure what could have happened over the winter as she was running fine last fall....the problem is that on this engine the points are located behind the flywheel which is within an inch of a fiberglass panel (bulkhead) amidships....looks like I am facing pulling the engine or cutting a 18 x 18 panel in the fiberglass....of course the fiberglass has a fiberglass "ridge" right where I would need to cut an access panel....not sure I want to cut that as it may be there for structural reasons....
Running fine last Fall makes me think there is corrosion on the points. They may even be stuck together, but most likely, they are stuck apart. Or maybe the set screw has come loose, and the points are not opening.
Look at the problem from a few vantage points. There may be a simple solution you haven't seen yet. I think of a way to do something, and my wife walks up and says something that initially is NOT the way to do it, but... Then I realize she has a point! With a little adjustment, her way has merit!
Anything you cut open can always be epoxied shut, but look around that idea first.
