Gas Engine Information

Hello All:

This is for all the VEGAtarians who are hanging on to their gas engines.
Recently I had a regulator failure and was wondering what I could do about
replacing the old system (first of all thanks to Dave for answering my plea
for a regulator). In the meantime I asked several parts shops, auto
wreckers, etc. if there was another way. Luckily for me I was directed
toward a farmer / mechanic / individual who appreciated older engines and
solutions for bringing them into the modern world. This is what he did
(thanks to Bill Bach for the extra engine). He took the generator (which is
attached to the engine via a bracket on the port side) and added a mounting
bracket for an alternator (he also cut the output wiring in the generator).
He put an additional pulley wheel on the generator to drive the alternator.
He attached a solenoid and wired the components. The result is that I now
have a generator that only starts the engine. The alternator charges my
batteries (incredibly fast) and it all fits easily into the engine
compartment. All the parts are off the shelf. In addition, this fall, he is
going to rebuild my spare engine, strip it and let me know what parts I need
for the rebuild. He suggested that he may fill in the rings with weld
material on the pistons, machine and rebore the cylinders so that the parts
are readily available at any auto parts store. As well, he is modifying the
engine by attaching a heat exchanger so that it is no longer raw water
cooled. I will post pictures when I bring my digital camera with me.
Incidentally my engine is running great. As I said before, the simplicity
and strength of the unit is unparalled, particularly given its age. Hope
this makes sense.

Cheers - V1039
