Two items broke yesterday, {it happens in three's, right?} The first was the Garmin 172c chartpotter. The unit was making a crackling sound and the depth sounder {built in} stopped working. The chartplotter was fine but no reading on depth. All was still OK on this beautiful sunny warm day, we had frost bitten yankee friends with us that were thawing out in the sunshine, winds were 12 knots and the temperature was topping out at 81 degrees. PERFECT! Then the 2nd unexspected noise of the day, Snap! and the genoa came sliding down the furler to the deck. A 20 year old piece of plastic from the CDI furler broke. Hmmm, 20 years of good service so I won't complain about that. Well, it was time to head back in so we motorsailed back to the dock in time for our company to catch their ride to the airport. I found the receipt for the chartplotter and would you believe the warranty expired in nine days. I called West Marine this moring and hey said bring it in and they would ship it out for me, by the way, that's another good reason to buy locally, service. Anyway, here's the question, what kind of turn around time have you had on warranty issues with Garmin? The fellow at West Marine didn't want to give me an estimate return date. By the way, I called CDI about the broken furler part and they were terrific, I should have that part Wednesday. Oh, and my friends catching their flight back to Boston, cancelled. mechanial issuess with the plane. So, back to the question, how has Garmin treated you with warranty claims? Jack

Garmin

I had a problem just passed summer, turn around was super fast, as a matter of fact just a few days! When time comes for more electronics Garmin will be at the top of the list.

Me too

Had condensation on my new(in June) 3206 and they got it back to me in about 10 days. They actually just sent me a new one after they had transferred all my data. I had it saved anyhow but it was that extra touch that really made the difference. Tim R.

There are bound to be exceptions, but I think if you search the archives you'll find generally favorable remarks about Garmin service and warranty. I've contacted them a couple of times by e-mail regarding software issues and got almost immediate replies.

jack, you should have sent it directly to garmin..

My experience with them was quite postivie the first time. Internal battery failed so I called them in Iowa, mailed the unit express mail that day, and received it back within a week. Unfortunately, the same unit (GPS 45-the white one) broke again, less than a year later but the warranty was now expired. They offered to replace it for 100 bucks... I said no thanks, went out and bought the GPS76, a far superior unit.

They're fine by me

I have several Garmin products, the oldest of which is a GPSII+ handheld. After 9 years, the internal battery pooped out and the unit wouldn't get a fix. Checked Garmin's website, called them to get an RMA number and was prepared to spend whatever to get it fixed (estimated $40-90). Sent it direct to KS and had it back in less than two weeks. They changed the battery, replaced the faceplate, put all new buttons in it (printing was worn off), updated the software, for the price of $0.00. Not bad!!

West Marine& Garmin warranty update

I asked about a Garmin Warranty and how they treated the customers. If anyone remembers I was nine days from the warranty expiring. I recieved a phone call today From West Marine. I can put up my new unit free of charge Friday. I thought I would pass along my praise of both companys. Hey, Would my new Garmin come with another 12 month warranty? Jack
