I need to know were to mount a depth sounder transducer. Should it be a transom mount or a thru - hull? I just had the boat put back in the water after doing the bottom painting and really dont want to go thru the cost of pulling her out again if I dont have to?.My wife just bought me the garmin bundle and I sure wished she would of told me last week............Thanks....bob

If your hull is solid glass with no voids you can build water box from Pvc drainout.Epoxy in location and use mineral oil not water. works fine, mine over ten years old with no problems. No haul.

I'm interested in this too.

As I am having a terrible time making my depth guage work consistently, I have thought about replacing it with, if nothing else, a fish finder. I had one on the old boat and simply stuck it on the inside of the hull with a big glob of vaseline and used it for two years. My question is; is the hull solid near the location of the original depth transducer and is there any reason why this wouldn't work there?

I have Hunter 27' put waterbox just forward of old transducer. Don't know what boat Bob has so put in about no voids such as cored hull[very rare below water line].BUT, a bad layup during production can make void that transducer will not read thru[again very rare]. Go for it.

Go to your local plumbing supply or Home Despot or Lowes and buy 4inch PVC drainout. Cut,grind file whatever until fits contour of your hull, make sure is vertical.Use thickened epoxy and apply inside and out to insure no leaks.Use appropriate holesaw for size transducer you have, cut hole in plug. Mount transducer in plug, fill to maybe halfway with mineral oil, replace plug with 'ducer-- done.

In front of keel...

unless you want to run aground BEFORE the transducer sees anything! Transom mount would be next to useless on a sailboat. Don't be afraid to use an inexpensive "fish finder", most work great as depthfinders.

I was real lazy....

I just took my transducer and found a spot that was solid in the hull and in front of the keel on my 25.5, bought a tube of clear caulking and squeezed out a big blob and smothered my transducer in it. I was carefull to make sure there were no bubbles. Make sure you have the depth finder hooked up so you can push it in and test where best to leave it in the caulking. Its been in there for a year and never a problem. Took about 5 minutes and no holes!

The best way to find your "sweet spot" for in the hull transducer location, is to take a zip lock bag..Fill it with water, and place it and the transducer in contact with the hull..Move it around untill you get the best return...You now have the spot to install your waterbox... The clean out is a clever way of doing it..I usually just tell folks to install the pipe, and cut a slit for the wire harness and drop the tranducer in, cover it with mineral oil, and put the cap on.. 73 Ed S/V MYST
