Garmin NMEA 2000 to Raymarine X10 Cable

Here's a question that should be simple but I want to make sure I don't do something stupid. I have a Garmin 425 GPS with a NMEA 2000 output. I want to connect this to my new Raymarine X10 autopilot. The X10 doesn't have an NMEA-type connector, only an open, bare-wire bus connection. I haven't found a NMEA 2000 cable with a round pkug connection on one side (for the Garmin) and bare wires on the other (for the X10.) Is this as simple as cutting off one end of a standard NMEA cable and stripping the wires? Or am I missing something?
Thanks,
Joe

You can just connect wire to wire, BUT make sure that the color coding for the raymarine unit and the color coding for the garmin unit are the same. If not, make sure your garmin OUT plus and minus are connected to the raymarine IN plus and minus. wire colors notwithstanding.

Absent that approach, I believe raymarine sells a bridge connecter to accomplish the interface. But it seems to me to be relatively expensive.

According to the Raymarine X10 brochure, the X10 does NOT accept NMEA2000 in; it only mentions SeaTalk and NMEA0183, the older standard.

I couldn't find info on the Garmin 425 GPS. Are you sure it's NMEA2000 and not NMEA0183?

Thanks for the confirmation. Raymarine does sell a NMEA 2000 to SeaTalkNG adapter but when I talked to them the support guy didn't recommend it for my situation. Of course, I hung up before asking the next question so I posted it here.

Thanks!
Joe

Ken, you are correct about the NMEA0183 connection. Thanks for pointing that out. I will be digging out my GPS manual later today!

On mine I have the Garmin hooked up to my VHS radio for the Distress feature of the radio. The problem is my Garmin only has one MNEA out lead. Can that lead be hooked to the
ST1000 autopilot and the radio?

The guy I spoke with at Raymarine indicated that the GPS and VHF could share a NMEA connection, although we didn't get into any real details. He said the biggest issue is that only one NMEA input be connected to the X10. Don't know how that applies to the ST1000.
