I am considering purchasing a Garmin GPSMap 492. They appear to come with either an internal antenna or external antenna. What is wrong with buying this unit with an internal antenna? Has anyone mounted this unit on or off to the side of your pedestal? If so, how did you accomplish this? Thanks, Greg W.

I got the 498 with the internal antenna back in the spring. So far as I can tell you give up nothing with the internal antenna. As for mounting, I got an Edson mount that mounts on the pedestal rail and will swivel out of the way when not in use. You can sit to the side of the wheel and move it so you can monitor the GPS while relaxing. You can also position the screen up or down in order to reduce glare. I'm very satisfied with the unit and the mounting.

I've got the IA in a Garmin 182

I bought it 5 years ago for just that reason and never had a problem. Mounting on the pedestal was easy and there was no interference. I have cruised for 2 weeks with a person that has the external and niether one of us had a problem with them. I'd go for it at any time.
