My Personal Experience

My personal experience says they're great. I would basically differ with PS, although I see their point. The small screen on a handheld makes it next to impossible to get the "big picture with details" like you do on a chart on on a bigger charting GPS. HOWEVER There is no doubt that in the use I had for it, it was invaluable. I wouldn't have wanted to try to chart a course across the Gulf with it, but it showed me my markers in the Texas ICS with amazing accuracy. It showed me which marker I needed to turn into to get to Anchor Marina (where I had never been) on the southern tip of TX (never been, at least on the water), in the dark at 11:00 at night (behind schedule because of engine problem). The detail was great enough that I could see the "fingers" in the map for the marina slip. When we sailed to Port Aransas, it again showed us the channel (VERY narrow) leading deep across the island to Island Moorings. Again, I wouldn't want to chart a long course on it, but it served its purpose, without a doubt. And, had it not been for the Blue Chart software, the whole process would have been more involved and clumsy.

Garmin GPS Map 76

I have a handheld Garmin GPS map 76 and I love it. I mounted it on my boat with an optional mounting device and I also got the 12 volt plug for it. I run it off of 12 volt so I never have to worry about batteries. The 12 volt cord is a MUST! I use my GPS for my coastal cruising. It does a great job and it is pretty easy to use. I haven't bought blue charts yet but from what I am seeing on the posts on this forum I think that I will. I would HIGHLY suggest this GPS.

GPS, VHF and PC

I'm also looking for a handheld GPS. I want to be able to interface it with my Standard Horizon Intrepid+ VHF so it show cordinates for DSC. I also want it to intreface with my laptop for a large 15" screen. Ideally, I would like to view the charts on my laptop with the boats position displayed on the chart as I sail across the monitor. Does Blue Chart or other software allow this? Mark http://home.att.net/~dragonflyb331/

GPS to multiple devices

If you want send the output of GPS to multiple devices you may need an opto-isolated expander that isolates the devices. See the EXP 32 NMEA Expander at the bottom of the link. Some say you can drive two devices with just a Y connector but when I tried it din't work.

Rob is correct re Garmin 76 Handheld

Everybody is right here. Ron said he's looking for a handheld. Rob is correct regarding the PS endorsement. PS says, "The map pages found in these handhelds are not very useful to the the mariner and we shy away from them..." PS also said, "With those thoughts in mind...we have settled on the Garmin GPS 76 as our top pick" If you are a big boat sailor or can afford a much more robust setup, go with the large screens and all the bells and whistles. The 76MapS is a vanilla 76 on steriods. The base maps are the same. Additional memory allows use of the Blue Map charts that match the paper charts exactly. Except for the squinting, my 76S does everything the more expensive units provide. I've even connected it to my DCS VHF. If you can afford it, go with the color version and additional memory the newer color Garmin 76 provides. http://kobernus.com/H260_web/electrical.htm
