OK, if I understand you correctly, this is very important. Even if you are making a mistake, it is evidently one that is easy to make even after a lot of discussion.

I can't believe that I do understand you correctly however so I want to be sure. Is this what you mean?

You set up the course shown in blue with waypoints WPT1, WPT2, etc. When you get to 2, Garmin sees that 6 is closest so it redirects you across the rocks. That can't be right. Or, is it?

That is correct. It's like the gps says it no need to go around when we can get there sooner by cutting across to WPT 6. If WPT7 is closer than WPT6 then it wants to take you to the finish at WPT7. The unit has what they are calling Advanced Guidance feature that may correct this but I think it is only used with the BlueChart Maps.

Rodger, it also depends on were you are located at the time you engage the route. Lets say that, per you drawing, you are located north some where between WPT6 and WPT7 when you bring up the route. It will take you to some point on the leg between WPT6 and WPT7 that is perpendicular to your position and the to WPT7.

That is correct.
If so, people are going to die, or at least lose their boats. Garmin will be in the clear because fine print says the GPS is only a convenience and shouldn't be your only or primary means of navigation. Just what is a "convenience" anyway?

Rodger, it also depends on were you are located at the time you engage the route.
If you engage at WPT1, will it take you around the planned route or over the rocks? Starting any route that you are not on, letting the GPS chose where to join it, and then just following blindly is not an appropriate procedure.

Hmmm... Did you build the route then SAVE it? Or just build it and tried to use the route?

Roger, if you engage the route at WPT1, it will want to go to 2 then 6 then 7.
Ron, I built the route and then save it.

Update........
Garmin has updated there software as follows:

Change History

GPSMAP 536/536S software version 3.70
as of March 29, 2011

Changes made from version 3.60 to 3.70:
Added a control for selecting the boat or first waypoint as the starting navigation point.

I hope this solves the problem we have been discussing. I let you know as soon as I can go to the boat and load the updates.
