West marine have this unit on sale for $249. If anyone is looking for a handheld as a backup, dinghy, small boat unit this is a good buy. I've used the Map76 for many years in small boats, motorcycles and in my truck.

Bob,

thanks. I picked one up. The problem is WM charged my wife $349 when she picked it up (ship to store). Now, I have to wrestle with the store manager for the $105 refund. Beware WM.

I'm not sure but if you read the reviews they say that they don't work with the Gorman 78 SC I just want to make sure I get the right chip

I have not read a lot of reviews of this gps. From what I did read my understanding is the coastal charts supplied with it are not very good south of the Bahamas. The Garmin chips work well and are very accurate. I did not see any reference that the Garmin g2 chips don't work in it.

The GPSMAP 78 (any version) uses a different format maps than some of the stationary chartplotters (e.g. 421s). This does not mean that Bluechart g2 is not available for one of them; only that the same SD card (it is not a chip, btw) would not work in both. You buy the format that works with your device. Or download it and put it on a SD card of your choice.
