Well, I've finally decided to replace my very old Garmin-45 GPS. I am planning to purchase a Garmin 76CSX. With their $100 rebate offer, I think it is a pretty good price. I know I can purchase a bluechart for lots of details, but I just can't quite see navigating only using a e-chart on a 1.5"x2.2" display. I plan to continue to use my large paper charts when I am cruising, but I would like to know what level of marine information details comes preloaded on the unit as part of the basemap. For example, are there any info on bouys, marinas, depth contours, coastline, etc. I assume I can set any of these info as a waypoint, or display all of the nearest bouys, maybe also in distance order. I think tide software is preloaded, how about current? Thanks in advance.

I have a Garmin GPSmap76S and the basemap has a rough coastline that can't be relied on. Major highways are shown. The tide and celestial functions (tides etc) are excellent. All the buoys appear to be there but if you want more detail, you'll need to purchase the BlueChart software. It's worth the money because it allows you to plan your waypoints and routes on the computer and transfer them to and from the GPS. My impression is that the CSX is similar to the 76S.
