Hey gang, in an effort to clean up the nav station a bit, I opted for a USB GPS reciever, specifically the Garmin 18 USB deluxe that plugs right into laptop. Looks pretty straight forward to install, and will allow me to go ahead and put my current handheld in the "grab and go". MY question is.. has anyone tried it or a similar device with Sea Clear II ? I use that as backup down below. Was 100 clams at costco. Thoughts? Cheers

Same but different

Should work fine. I use a Garmin 72 as a receiver with Seaclear II. No problems so far. I've heard tales of computers reading the gps as a mouse, so you may have to do a little troubleshooting. Other than that, it's all good.

USB GPS

It works. The USB GPS emulates a comm port. You can see the message from the USB in Seaclear under Tools. I have a Dell Laptop with a Delus GPS, NOAA (Maptech) free chart for lake Ontario. I use a 8 inch LCD touch screen as remote monitor mounted on the binnacle. The laptop is strapped on the nav table below. The touchscreen driver was a bit tricky to install. I need to download another driver. I can use my finger to drag the chart across the screen. For very fine menu, there is a palmpilot stylus that came with the monitor. http://www.gooddeals18.com /product/SHK840/new_8_inch_Desktop_TFT_LCD_Monitor_w_Touch_Screen__VGA.html The accuracy was amazing. I download the waypoints from my old Garmin 76 and the lat-long are right on. The monitor is not "marine" but I have a dodger and bimini covered cockpit. In bad weather I just put a ziplock bag over it.
