Hi .... we recently bought a Garmin 162 GPS with an external antenna. On our 99 Hunter 340 where would someone suggest we install the antenna. On the arch, transon, rail, etc ??? I would be interested in hearing others opinions ... thanks ... Dennis

Don't have an answer but...

I'm looking at the 162 right now thinking it's a good upgrade from my handheld 12. Have you used it, what do you think? Also, I assume you are downloading the charts from a computer. Good luck so far?

Mine is on the stern rail...I would

be hesitant to mount it on the arch for fear of it being ripped off with the boom!

I have the XL12 and an external antenna

on the stern rail. I have a 'Sunbrella' cover for the antenna and interestingly the GPS still works with the cover on. I thought that the GPS needed a clear view of the sky but I guess that a cover doesn't count.

Rail, or Where ...

Of the four GPS's, one suggested high, like a radar arch; one said low (less movement) and two, I don't recall. Most of the boats around ElAye have them on the rail even if they have an arch, unless they are power. Likely a function of convenience. Good Luck, Rick D.

Advice in Installation Manual?

Is there a recommendation in the installation manual that came with the unit? I have a Northstar GPS and in the installation manual it recommended installing the antenna as low as possible to minimize error induced through rolling. I can't imagine how much error that can produce, but I put it on the stern rail anyway.

The antenna for my Garmin GPS 135 is under the stern rail, well aft. It has some metal hardware above it but I can't find any degradation from the stern rail mount used previously. Since my boat is unattended a lot, I'd rather not draw attention to any expensive goodies on board. It seems to have at least 7 satellites full scale and a couple others as usable, just the same as when mounted topside. Ken S/V Wouff Hong

Don, you can download...

...the complete owners manual for the 162 from the Garmin website. I purchased a 162 about a month ago but have not used the Mapsource CD's yet. The 162 has a nice large display and more features than I can remember. Great unit! Mark Kissel Kittiwake/98H240
