Hello, all. Happy New Year!

At the beginning of March, my wife, my son, and I are going to bareboat in the BVIs. (A lot of that seems to be going around lately!! ;)) I have a Garmin 76cx handheld with the g2 map of the US. While the BVIs show up on the map, with more detail than I thought but not too much, would the g2 chart for the Southeast Caribbean show more navigation detail? The US chart model # is HXUS039, and the SE Caribbean chart is HXUS030. Anyone have both and compared them? Reason I'm asking is the SE Caribbean chart would cost between $100 and $150, so if it's not going to show any more detail, I wouldn't spend the money.

Thanks!!!!

Sailing in the BVI is so simple you could do it with a placemat. In fact, that's similar to what they provide you with. Don't worry so much. Just relax and enjoy the chill factor. 82*..... heh heh. SS

Agreed. The BVIs are pretty much visual line sailing. No need for a GPS.

I agree. Get your head OUT of the boat, it's too beautiful to be looking at a computer screen.

I've/We've been there three or four times, once with a GPS. Useless and a distraction. Nice toy, certainly unnecessary. Have fun first, foremast, last and all the time instead. :):):)

Save the $$ for the rum!

Have a great trip.

Have to agree with the general theme. We have been x3 and never needed a GPS. Actually made the experience more fun. Last trip we did bring our handheld Garmin and it had charts for most of the area. I seem to recall that it didn't reach to Anegada; but my wife thinks it did (so it probably did). Enjoy the trip.

I agree with all the previous comments. Additionally, many (if not most) charter boats are equipped with a full sized chart plotter at the helm station. You should ask the charter co. before hassling over it more than you need to! Having GPS is fun, if only to see how fast you're going (nearly every boat I've chartered there has no working speedo- depth yes, speedo, no…).

Thanks for all the comments. We did charter there before, so I know it's all line of sight. I'm not worried at all, just wanting to play with the toy a little bit.

Koolfrog, is the VUS chart you're talking about the g2 vision? If so, my handheld, 76cx, doesn't support the vison cards, just the regular. I've got the HXUS039 card for the U.S.

I'm getting excited. One of my Christmas presents was the cruising guide. Can't put it down. Reminiscing about the last time there, looking forward to this time!! Thanks, all, and Happy New Year!!

As mentioned, most boats are equipped with a GPS so not necessary to bring one. They come in handy if sailing at night.

G2 Vision Card

I use a G2 Vision card in my Garmin 76c..(whatever it is). It will read the chart info but you cannot see the nifty little pictures from the cards on the GPS. I can see the pictures when using Map Source or whatever the program is on the PC so I know they are there. The downside to the Vision chip is it covers a smaller area I think mine goes from Brownsville to Key West where the G2 chip I think is Brownsville to Virginia was not an issue for me when I bought it I'm not going that far.
