I will finally be getting my Oday 25 into the water this coming April- bought a Garmin DV44 Chartplotter /GPS, and am impressed with the unit. Problem was it was made for a transom mount and there was NO way I was going to drill holes in my new transom plate. Was also concerned about cavitation, and location.
I had a speedo hole forward of the keel, and figured if I could build up a mount for the sending unit on the hull over the hole I could make a stainless plate with a 5/16th bolt welded to it to hold the unit against the hull along with some Sikaflex. That worked pretty well, though I may round off the corners next year....
Next problem is that Garmin supplies a nice large black mount one can clip the plotter to, but it's really meant for vertical mounting. I wanted mine on a bulkhead, and with the unit attached it would stick out almost 9" right where my furler line and who know what else would be coming through. Took up way too much space in the cockpit. I'm in Maine, and didn't want to permanently mount the plotter unit to the bulkhead - too cold in winter - or start drilling holes in the salon bulkhead for the long bulkhead mounting screws.
Got a block of teak, bored out depressions slightly over depth with forstner bits, filled the whole thing with thickened epoxy, covered it with a plastic bag, and embedded the clip mount and the unit together in the epoxy to make a form-fitting mold. Cleaned up the edges, drilled mounting holes , painted it, attached the clip mount, and it works like a charm sticking out just 2 3/4"- I could have made it 1/2" thinner, but didn't bother.
I have the power and data wires passing through a bored out rubber stopper cut in half across the holes then inserted to the hull with some sealant. Have spoken to a couple of electronics guys and they say it should work, but I'm just waiting.....
