Thought I would start a new thread instead of hijacking another.

Anyone have experience with Garmin new Autopilot and linear drive system. There isn't a rudder position sensor, nor do they mention the need for one. The wireless remote option is something that I like too. I haven to pulled the trigger on purchasing yet (~$4000 including remote), so if you have any opinions... I would like to hear them. Other option was the Raymarine, but they seem to be leaving older systems in the dust with support.

I installed a GHP 12 on my Caliber last year. It works great. I did not use the Garmin drive as I already had a Simrad HLD1200 pneumatic drive. I had to use a Raymarine rudder sensor. The nice part is that I can read the rudder postion on my Garmin GMI10 even though the Garmin tech said it would not display anywhere but the AP display.

The GHP12 is connected to my GMI10 system via NMEA2000 and connected to my chart plotter via NMEA0183. The AP can steer by wind angle or plotted course.

Thanks Tim. Would you recommend adding the rudder sensor, or would I be OK without.

I think you need it, Ralph. Maybe the Garmin drive unit comes with one though. Check with Garmin.
