Read what I could find in the archives on interconnecting my gps to my AP and dsc vhf but I'm still a little vague on the output of the gps, nmea compatibility of the 3 units, pin to pin connections and possibility of also tying my Standard horizon ps1000 dsc vhf radio into the gps at the same time. My pedistal mount 276c sits directly above the wp32 control j-box which is next to the remote ram mount vhf pedestal outlet(base unit mounted in the galley). Should I simply run signal wire from the gps into the simrad j-box and patch into the vhf ram socket or find a spot to mount a buss bar. Sounds fairly simple once I get a little more specific pin to pin advice and what didn't work from those who've overcome the trial and error. Your experience is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Michael

some info

Hello, The units should all be compatible with NMEA 0183. You will need to read the owners manual to figure out what wires to connect. It's pretty simple, three wires are all you need: data in, data out, and ground. Data out on the GPS goes to data in on the radio and vice versa. To connect the GPS and the VHF require you to run the wire to the radio head unit, not the RAM mic. I don't know if you can connect two devices at the same time, I think you can, but you need to try it. I have my Lowrance GPS connected to my Standard Horizon VHF and it was simple to do. The radio displays an icon on the screen when it receives data from the GPS. I didn't bother to connect my old Raymarine Autohelm unit. Garmins" carry part of the NMEA data on

the negative power lead, therefore it is necessary to put a jumper between the negative power and negative NMEA. See the schematic on page 103 of the owners manual for your 276.

Hi Michael, the Garmin 178C interface...

with our Autohelm 7000 required only one lead, the one that sends data from the GPS to the autopilot. Our AP never sends data to the GPS, so no need for the other lead. Works great. See link. Terry http://kb.sailboatowners.com/brand?post=431
