I do not see anything in the archives....so need help. West Marine says the Garmin 182C is the best selling chartplotter....so if you have one, comments especially if you have a built in antenna....Bruce Keller ARIEL 1994 H30

Have one

but it has the remote antenna. It is outstanding. You can read the full operator's manual by downloading it at this site: http://www.garmin.com/products/manual.jsp?product=010-00238-00 That should answer any questions about it.

I have one - internal antenna

I have the 182C on the Pedistal, even under the arch and bimini, still works perfectly. Screen is great even in sunlight.

I have the Internal Antenna

Bruce, I have a 182 (not color, not available any more)) with the internal antenna. Peter P. has one (not color) with the external antennae. My brother has a 182C w/internal antennae. All operate easily and accurately and are user-friendly with the same software. I have had mine since 2002 and have used it all over New England (even pea-soup fog in Penobscot Bay). Very pleased with it. Reception with the internal antenna has been flawless, even under the wet bimini in the rain. With the internal antenna, I can take the unit below and plot my next day's route and still get marginal reception down below. (it's not necessary to have reception to plot a course). This, of course, requires you to purchase the 12v, cigarette-lighter-type of plug (6' long) to make it mobile. I got my best price online at Consumer Electronics' web site located in NJ (no sales tax, next-day delivery).

Excellent

I have the external antenna model also, but I have used internal antenna models below at the nav desk, and they work fine down there, so the internal antenna will work great at the helm, even if under a bimini, and with no antenna cable to run. The color screen is very bright, and completely readable in direct sunlight. The Blue Chart data is excellent - get the chip that covers your area. I wired mine to my ST-4000 autopilot. I get Speed Over Ground info on my ST-60 speed instrument via SeaTalk network, and waypoint info on the autopilot. If I plan a trip of waypoints on the GPS, the autopilot will take the boat from one waypoint to the next. If you have a DSC capable radio, you can also send GPS info to it. I believe the 182C is being phased out. You will be able to get one at a fairly good price now, if you can get one at all. The replacement, whose model number I don't recall, comes with ALL of the Blue Chart data built in, with no cards or CDs to buy, and the price as I recall was lower than the 182C was before the close out price. Good luck.

I would look at the Garmin 192c. It costs more but you don't have to buy the expensive chips. Just my thoughts, good luck, jack

If you're going to cover a lot of distance..

the chips get pricey and you have to order them, plan ahead, etc. Downloadable charts via CD make life a little easier and cheaper. And, like most things, get the biggest screen you will pay for...182 is great, bigger is better.

Gramin 192c

I had the option to buy the 182C at a discount because it was being discotinued - opted instead for the 192C and am very glad I did. For the price you get the full US charts and still have a slot for a chip for Canada, the Carribean, so forth. The screen is very bright and you can zoom in - probably beyond the most detailed charts, so you have to be careful not to be mislead that information at that level is completely acurate.

Go 192C

I would suggest the 192C over the 182C for several reasons namely, 192C comes with charts for the most of the coastal waters of USA. 192C is brighter and has a faster redraw time.Should you must have the internal antenna that is also avaibable on the 192C series. As for being higher in price check the web for the best price you might be very suprised.
