We're thinking of buying a Garmin 182C chart plotter for our Hunter 37.5 Has anyone had any experience with this unit? Is an external antenna essential (we will be installing it at the helm and have no Bimini, just a cloth awning)? Where can we find the best pricing (West Marine is $999)? Bud

182c for me

We have a 182c on a c30 . We went with the unit that has the antenna built in , great feature. We installed it at the helm ,ran the cable inside the binnicle. Works fine and we remove it for stowage at the end of the day.

No promises but (+)

Check Defender.com We bought a 176C from them for our Alberg 30--very reasonable. Fair winds, Bill

Best Price was at Boat Show

Ordered 182c with antenna for $799 at NY Boat Show from West Marine. Boaters World had the same price. Advantage from West Marine is that you get back $15 for every $300 you spend!

Dave's marine electronics has a price of $853 and Garmin offers a $100 rebate on a trade in of an old plotter or loran(working or not) Last year I bought a $15 loran on ebay and used it for the trade in. I was worried when Garmin called me at home to question me about the rebate. Turns out they also had a $50 rebate on the maps I bought for the unit and simply wanted to know if they could combine the checks. Be careful because many sellers advertise a price that includes this rebate. Dave's is priced without the rebate and he is a great guy to deal with. When I bought all my stuff from him I was able to lower the price even more. He has a link on his website where you can tell him everything you are planning on buying and he will quote you a lower price than he advertises. Also, that rebate from WM is only if you are a member of their buyers clubs which costs money to join. You will also be paying sales tax if you buy at a show. Tim

No external antenna.

Our handheld Garmins work without an external antenna even in the cabin. Our helm mounted Garmin 126 with built in antenna works fine under our bimini. Some manufacturers seem to be affected more by obstructions than others.

Garmin 182

I have a Garmin 182 (Grayscale) w/internal antennae now on my Legend 37, for 2 seasons and very happy. Best deal I found at the time was Consumer Marine Electronics (www.consumersmarine.com). Received shipment in two days. Its $929 now, for 182C. Remember that you also have to buy a chip. The internal antennae allows you to relocate it to the salon (w/ optional cig lighter adapter power cord) to work with it there when plotting a course for the next day. Color wasn't available at the time and cost $300 less. Charts/screens are very readable. It's quite the tool. P.S. Check eBay for the chips. Search "bluechart".

Buy programable chips

I bought the programable chip and the bluechart software. Garmin allows you to load the maps on 2 different devices. That way I can use my Garmin Etrex Legend as a backup with all the maps loaded on it also. You can purchase the chip, bluechart and a card programmer as a kit. Tim

Garmin 182c for 37.5

I just installed my 182c on my 37.5 and love it. It is just the right size and the screen during the day and night was fabulous. The chart plotter worked perfect. Just finished a round trip to Encenada and never had a problem. Dont mount the antenna on the helm, it mounts real nice on the stern rail just off the stern sailing seat. I got mine at Maritime, MDR. those guys are the best in the business and were pros with the install. Good Luck.

Interface with radar?

I'm considering a 182C, along with a Raymarine mono radar, such as the SL70. On a 33 foot boat, I don't see a need for a repeating station at the nav desk, so no need for the RL series. My thinking is that the 182C will be used quite often, so I want the color chartplotter, and the radar would be used at night/low vis situations, so no need for the bright color radar (and a big $$$ savings). Can the 182C be interfaced properly with the SL70, which would also be interfaced with the ST-60 wind/speed/depth?

If...

If the SL70 has NMEA inputs than it should interface with the 182c which does have NMEA outputs. I am trying to figure out the interface between my 182c and Furuno 1622. Tim

Raymarine says the SL70 has

2 NMEA inputs, 1 NMEA output, and 1 Sea Talk output. Sounds like it may work...
