Trying to decide if the Garmin 176 is a good chartplotter. Seems a bit small and I'm concerned if it shows enough detail. What about chart availability? Color vs gray? The 176 vs the 182? I sail the Chesapeake and hope to do some coastal up to Long Island next season. Thanks.

Joe, I have a 176 C and am very satisfied. The display is small but the new Garmin charts are great and you can expand the display until you have the detail needed. I use it in my truck as well as my boat. One other plus, I just had $5000 worth of instruments damaged by a nearby lightning strike. The 176 did just fine sitting home in my drawer. The only drawback is reading the display in bright sunlight under a bimini. Out in the sunlight the display is fine and at night it is great with the back lighting, but something about the display makes it hard to read under a bimini when there is no direct light striking the display.

Love mine

I put a 176C on my H376 and love it. I can move it from the ockpit to the nav table w/o a problem. I hardwired it into the pedestal and interfaced it with my 6000 auto pilot. Works like a champ.

had some trouble

I bought a 176 c that I jut love but it did give me some trouble that required a few trips to the factory. They finally fixed it but it had left me without a GPS during a very bad storm coming around cape sable florida at night. No problem since repairs done
